Early days
The Flame, first published in April of 1935 as a bimonthly organ of the Calvary Holiness Church, is now published quarterly as a resource for all those interested in biblical holiness. The Flame exists to give scriptural holiness a united voice throughout the world and to promote what John Wesley called “inward and outward holiness” –– that is, holiness of heart and life, a spiritual experience leading to a daily walk with Christ that permits men and women to “do righteousness” (1 John 3.7).
Because it does not promote a particular doctrinal position and strives to be apolitical, its contributors and its subscribers hail from a variety of denominations and backgrounds. The magazine is now organized as an independent not-for-profit trust with five trustees drawn from Great Britain and North America.
The current editor is Andrew E. J. Gutteridge, and the head of production and design is William J. Glasgow. The trustees are Ann C. Gutteridge, Carolyn J. Gutteridge, John Lemperes, William Malcolm, and Charles Dana Pereau.
Although the appearance of The Flame has changed many times over the years, its purpose as an independent Christian Holiness publication has remained the same: to make righteousness readable.
